Purpose

To give the student should a thorough knowledge of the practical aspects of DP operations. He/she should be capable of planning and conducting any DP operation, including risk assessment, contingency planning and assessment of vessel capability. He/she should also be able to react correctly to any circumstances which could lead to catastrophic failure or which constitute catastrophic failure itself.

Content

The training is based on the programme as outlined by the recommendations contained in The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines.
Training is a mix of theoretical sessions and practical exercises in simulators, using Kongsberg DP.

Objectives

  • By use of simulator equipment, the student must demonstrate ability to set up and operate DP system, including special functions as Auto track and follow target, sensors and associated Position reference systems.
  • The student must demonstrate ability to carry out a DP operation. All elements of the operation must be adequately covered. This includes planning using all relevant information, contingency planning, worksite approach, use of checklists, communication, DP watch schedule, DP hand over and DP log book requirements.
  • The student must describe the limitations of the DP systems during operations in shallow and deep waters.
  • The student must demonstrate knowledge of conditions that will cause degraded or emergency status to prevail.
  • The student must eva luate various information received and recognize warnings and alarms associated with catastrophic failures.
  • The student must demonstrate correct behavior in connection with failures and take appropriate action to stabilize the vessels position after a failure.

Assessment

Instructors will assess and score the candidate during theoretical and practical exercises. The course must be passed with 70% of max score. The score sheet contains will be presented during start of course.

Admission Requirements

Participants must have attended and satisfactorily completed an approved Dynamic Positioning (DP) basic course. Documented minimum sea-going DP familiarization (30 or 60 days depends on scheme) with sufficient entries in the training log.
Participants must hold either a STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck or a Regulation III/1 – III /2 – III/3 Engine certificate. Valid certificate must be presented on the first day of the course as proof.
Persons who have a DP Basic / induction course dated before January 1st 2012 can join the course, if the complete DPO training can be completed within a 5 year period.

Additional information

After successfully completion of Advanced/Simulation course, delegates may obtain certificate "Crew resource management in an offshore environment" upon their request.
